What is a carbon footprint?
We all have an impact on the environment and each of us can help build a healthier future This rings especially true for companies operating in the healthcare industry.
Carbon footprint is an indicator of product impact on the environment. The impact is measured mainly by energy consumption from hydroelectricity, various fuels and natural gases required to manufacture and distribute a product.
Current efforts to reduce carbon footprint are focused on three main actions:
1. Measuring carbon footprint
Measuring a company's carbon footprint is a complex process. The first is to provide a picture of the company’s main sources of greenhouse gas emissions. This analysis can then determine a company’s reduction goals, produce a strategic action plan and ultimately track progress.2. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by establishing a concrete action plan: o Determine areas for reducing GHG emissions in the production line. o Target opportunities to reduce energy costs and optimize energy efficiency of all facilities. o Take advantage of government GHG reduction programs.3. Offsetting GHG emissions
GHG emissions can be "compensated" by reducing or by appropriating an equivalent amount of GHG’s from other sources. There are several GHG or "carbon offset" programs available for organizations that want to invest in offset projects.EcoloPharm has been committed to this very process for 10 years.
We rigorously measure the carbon footprint of our products throughout all stages of the life-cycle and take into account all the GHG emitted at each stage. We carefully analyze the design, material selection, production, distribution, use and the management of end-of-life of our entire product line.
By fully redesigning our production and distribution chains we were able to develop 100% ecodesigned packaging products with the lowest carbon footprint on the market.
Our manufacturing process represents:
- 55% reduction in energy consumption
- 39% reduction in packaging waste
- 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
- 30% reduction in plastic consumption
What can pharmacies and health professionals do?
The health of the planet is a shared responsibility. Whether it's pharmacy owners, lab assistants, floor staff or patients themselves; each of us can help build a healthier future.
For companies working in healthcare, the responsibility resonates even more to act on our environmental impact. By promoting eco-friendly companies and products, we are directly helping to reduce carbon footprint and taking concrete action to safeguard the environment.
The CarboneutreTM program is available in Quebec for businesses including pharmacies concerned with their carbon footprint. The program, which is unique in North America, aims to make pharmacies eco-responsible and socially supportive. The certification aims to combat global warming and certifies that all GHG emissions from pharmacies have been calculated and offset.
Discover all stages of the program with Recyc-Québec and best practices in sustainable development.

Ecodesign is the consideration and integration of all the environmental criteria necessary for the design of a product.
From the ideation phase of our products, and throughout their life cycle, we make sure we have the lowest environmental impact possible. From raw material extraction, product manufacturing and end-of-life, to distribution, use and recycling.
