Testimonial

Our customers are changing the world, one packaging at a time.

“Pharmacy and the medical system in general can seem quite “wasteful” in terms of the sheer amount of single use products that are required to maintain patient safety. We chose EcoloPharm vials, ointment jars, and blister packaging supplies because they are made in Canada (support local and less waste in fuels for distribution!), made with less plastic than comparable products, and easily recyclable (among so many other reasons)! Our patients love these products too!”

FAQ

product

How are EcoloPharm vials different from other vials?

The EcoloVial is the only vial moulded in a single piece.

Thanks to its design, it has the lowest environmental impact on the market, in addition to offering numerous operational advantages:

  • No more need to order caps separately (a simple action allows you to switch from a secure to an easy-to-open version)
  • Space saving in the laboratory
  • Less time spent on inventory management

Numerous ecological benefits:

  • Its design requires 35% less plastic than conventional vials
  • Its production uses less water and energy
  • GHG emissions from manufacturing these vials are 33% lower (compared to push-turn or arrow capped vials)
  • Since they’re moulded in a single piece, vials are shipped closed so there is no need for plastic shipping bags.

See the Our Impact section to find out more about our products’ environmental benefits.

Why don’t you sell the caps separately?

Because of its unique design (vial and cap are moulded in a single piece), the EcoloVial has the lowest environmental impact on the market.

By not selling caps separately, we can offer a multifunctional product with numerous operational advantages (saving space in the laboratory, reducing time spent on inventory management in the pharmacy, etc.).

In addition, it’s also thanks to the EcoloVial’s innovative design that we can have a considerable impact on the environment:

  • Our vial contains 35% less plastic than a conventional vial.
  • Its design requires less water and energy, and produces fewer GHGs.
  • As they are preassembled with their caps, our vials are shipped closed, which eliminates the need for plastic shipping bags.

What’s the difference between the clear vial and the green one?

The colour of the vial is directly related to the level of protection against ultraviolet (UV) rays.

While the clear vials offer a relatively low protection, the green ones provide a 97% UV protection* (the highest protection on the market) for the medicine they contain.

*On average, based on the vial size.

Is your vial compatible with my automated system?

The EcoloVial is not currently compatible with automation, but we are working on adapting it for robotization.

Ecoresponsibility and sustainable development

Aren’t all vials recyclable?

Yes… and no. Fundamentally, polypropylene (type 5, the material used to manufacture the EcoloVial) is a highly recyclable material.

However, the recyclability of a material varies according to sorting centers’ capacities.

For instance, to ensure a product’s recyclability, it needs to be made of a single material, made from a material sought after by recyclers, and of the right size (small pieces, such as caps, often end up in the trash).

This is why ecodesign is so beneficial: the approach takes into account as many environmental criteria as possible right from the product’s inception, to avoid unnecessary impact on the environment.

Are your vials reusable?

As there may be a risk of cross-contamination between certain medications, the decision whether or not to reuse a vial of medication rests with your pharmacist.

What kind of material is used?

EcoloVials are made entirely of polypropylene (type 5), a highly recyclable plastic.

Why don’t you use recycled plastic or bioplastic?

Because our products are designed to hold prescription drugs, we are subject to strict safety standards. For this reason, we cannot use recycled plastic.

As for bioplastic, we investigated this possibility, before concluding that its environmental footprint was higher than that of polypropylene.

We’re committed to continuous innovation to create solutions with the lowest possible environmental impact. To find out more about our product design process, visit this section.
